This year’s Vivid Sydney saw a mélange of interactive installations, contemporary music performances, mesmerizing outdoor light sculptures, etc. At this new media event, the Australian Bureau of Statistics hosted an interactive installation which projected data visualizations of the information collected and analyzed by the civic body of Australia.
‘Come to Your Census’ fused the concept of interactive installation and data visualization to present the data that was collected by the Census in 2011. The potentially migraine-inducing Census data was exhibited to the hoi polloi of Australia in a way that educated them about the statistics of the region in a captivating way. It showed the public interesting information on key factors about Australia, its sex ratio, etc. and how it all fits in together to create a clearer picture of the country.
An individual could input his/ her personal data using a multitouch interface; this data would co-relate with the Bureau’s collated statistics. The light installation would then portray cool visualizations on this inputted data and at the same time present astounding facts around it. Another projection simply showed infographics that imparted general Census information. A kiosk, next to the installations, gave access to people to the microsite of Australian Bureau of Statistics. The flash microsite too is very cool with its witty voice over and quirky information bits; check it out here. (In contrast the Bureau’s website is pathetically boring! High bounce rate guaranteed. View it here.)
The installation was a great merger of data visualization and projection mapping to create an environment where mind numbing Census data was presented in a dynamic, amusing and lively way.
