SENSEable City Laboratory in collaboration with ARES Lab (Aerospace Robotics and Embedded Systems Laboratory) initiated a project called Flyfire that uses miniature helicopters to create digital images in open spaces. The helicopters serve as a multi-coloured light source hovering close to each other.
Together, these helicopters form a unit of pixels that create a full image in the air. The position and motion of the helicopters can be easily controlled and shaped to form various patterns and waves in open air. The motion of these ‘smart pixels’ is monitored and changed in real-time by ARES Labs’ technology. Owning to the flexibility of the project, interesting images, 3D visuals, patterns, etc. can all be created, transitioning from one form to another to give life to a free-form display.
